Changes to Westly Feature Articles

By Scott Richmond

Westfly's extensive archive of feature articles has been updated:

  1. The format is now consistent with the format of new articles. The exception is some older articles with photos or illustrations; articles less than two years old have image thumbnails that can be enlarged, but older articles do not.
  2. Most articles contain an abstract at the beginning. This will help users decide whether to read the article or not. News articles that have a short shelf life do not have an abstract.
  3. All articles now have a place for users to rate the article.

Hundreds of Articles in Archives

Westfly has nearly 400 articles in its archives. These cover such subjects as product reviews, destinations, tactics, humor, and essays. Users can find the feature article archives by clicking the "Articles" link in the top navigation line of every page. You can get lists of articles by subject, author, key word, or other criteria; click on the title and you'll be taken to the article.

Find by Popularity

Another way to find articles is by popularity. Westfly keeps track of how many times an article is viewed. You can get a list of the most popular 25 articles by selecting that option on the archives page (see above).

Find by Destination

Destination articles are automatically linked to the report pages. For example, if you view the report for Oregon's Deschutes River, you'll find related articles referenced at the bottom of the middle column. Click on the title, and you'll see the article.

Similarly, recent news articles (less than six months old) are now linked on the report pages; the also show up in the middle column.

Seasonal Articles

Some articles are seasonal. These have been identified in the database by the months for which they apply. They will be listed on the home and state entry pages.

Rate the Articles

Be sure to rate articles. That will help other Westflyers find the best pieces. And if you find something in an article that needs correcting, click "Contact Us" at the bottom of the page and let us know.

Scott Richmond is Westfly's creator and Executive Director. He is the author of eight books on Oregon fly fishing, including Fishing Oregon's Deschutes River (second edition).
