Preface

I visited Westfly for years to check river levels, but until recently hadn't paid attention to other options on the page. I've never seen an on-line forum before and must admit some things seem pretty strange.

Even though I live here, I've never heard of many of the rivers Westfliers fish (i.e. the Mac, Yak, and Clack). The D, I believe, is the shortest river in the world and located in Lincoln City, but I've never seen anyone fishing it. And, the river that evidently has the best fishing, the Zipperlip, I can't find on any map of any Northwest state.

It seems everyone wants to fish with Rondi. He must be a great fisher, or maybe she is a really hot chick (perhaps one of those from that fishing calendar everyone keeps talking about). Either way, I want to meet him or her.

People here have weird names, part man and part insect or fish or animal. It brings to mind the Satyrs I read about in fantasy fiction books as a youth. I guess that might explain the nymphs too. But it gets more strange. Apparently Westfly is a place where:

1. Asking, "Do you swing?" isn't an extremely personal question.
2. People tie one on and don't even get tipsy.
3. Beer is a necessary fishing tool
4. Your vice has nothing to do with an addiction. ...or does it?
5. A flame consumes none of your firewood.
6. A post isn't part of your fence, or the newspaper in D.C.
7. A fly club is worthless for swatting mosquitoes.
8. "Steelhead" isn't an insult.
9. You're told to watch out for redds, but other colors seem okay.
10. You can carry a 'toon if you want to, but don't expect anyone to sing along. Most people float them.
11. The size of your fly isn't about how tall you are, it's about what you're trying to catch.
12. Take-out has something to do with a shuttle, but apparently nothing to do with Chinese food or outer space. Unless, maybe, if Darth Wader is driving the shuttle.

A

a.k.a. - the great unmasking, a trend during which many Westfly handles were altered to reflect the poster's actual name

Aggressive Rock - mysterious, bottom-dwelling creature responsible for phantom bumps and tugs while nymphing, often associated with dulling hooks and fly theft; prevalent hook-ups occur while deep nymphing, especially for steelhead; also Aggressive Limb

Aquarium Hole - any hole on a river with an elevated view of the fish below, usually found where the water is gin clear and the fish are impossible to land

GraciesDad - There's a place that some of us have unofficially named the "Aquarium Hole" on the Metolius where the water is probably 8 feet deep and so clear that you can count the spots on the backs of the bull trout. There's room on the ledge for one angler to cast at a time. Bulls and rainbows and whitefish are all clearly visible, and equally impossible to land by yourself - besides, if you do get one of the monster bulls hooked, you're going to want a witness to attest to you your feat (see WBTNT) (See photo)

Around the Bend - 1.) the place where the gear heads are usually found, 2.) the next hopeful place, 3.) where the best fishing is (related to the grass-is-always-greener philosophy)

B

BB - Bulletin Board, a reference to a forum

BFD - Big Freaking Deal, occasionally more profane

BFNG Hatch - Big Fat Naked Guy Hatch, the occasional free spirit found along the Metolius or McKenzie Rivers; usually unattractive, naked, middle aged hippies

BH - Beadhead

BHGRHE - Beadhead Gold Ribbed Hares Ear

BHPTSH - Beadhead Pheasant Tail Soft Hackle; good all around nymph along with NWHE

BHRLFBHE - Beadhead Rubber Legged Flashback Hare's Ear

BHRLKSN - Beadhead Rubber Legged Kaufmann Stonefly Nymph (See photo)

BHWB - Beadhead Woolly Bugger

BOHICA - Bend Over Here It Comes Again. A useful term for describing the Bonneville Power Administration and/or products of the Ford Motor Co.

BRB - Be right back

BS - Bull Sh*t, what fly fishermen do best, most often, and with little effort

BTW - By The Way

BWO - Blue Wing Olive, the insect that fish eat year 'round, but one that anglers never seem to be able to effectively imitate (See photo)

Biggun' - a "big" fish relative to the person using the word. Most keeper-sized steelhead or salmon qualify, as do most trout over 13", unless it's in a bigguns lake. The word can be, but is not necessarily, synonymous with "hawg"

Bikini Hatch - babes basking in the sun along river banks; one of the worst things about fishing in the summer...oh, the suffering!

Bluebacks - sea-run cutthroat, also "SRC"

Bobber Fishing - using a floaty thing on your leader; see "indicator"

Boo - 1.) a bamboo flyrod, 2.) an insatiable, all consuming obsession, 3.) one of most the important accouterments for the flyfishing purist, believed to magical powers, 4.) an avatar, also "Cane" or "Grass"

BOOT - 1.) a somewhat derogatory term for a bull trout given for their likeness to pulling in a boot off the river bottom when hooked, 2.) a dark steelhead with bull trout tendencies

Bottom Dragger (also Knuckle Dragger) - nymph fisherman who fishes heavy nymph rigs with the expectation of snagging on the bottom

Bow - Rainbow Trout, also "Redside", "Redband" and "Fat Freddie" (See photo)

Breathables - Gore-Tex Breathable Waders, fantastic new invention believed to be in the larval stage of development. Only plastic material known to man that spoils

Brits - British

Brookies - Eastern Brook Trout, a non-native fish found in Oregon; usually easy to catch due to their aggressive nature and microscopic brains. Less wary relative of the bull trout (See photo)

Bull - 1.) a bull trout; what a Brook trout would look like as a BALCO client, (See photo) 2.) a reference to Westfliers' talk around the rondi campfire

Bump - (1) steelhead fisherman's false hope. Sometimes the total excitement of a trip, causing them to exclaim gleefully, "I GOT A BUMP!", (2) to bring a thread to the top of the forum by simply posting the word, "bump". Sometimes this can be malicious if everyone just wants the thread to go away

Burning Pram - Washington's version of an Oregon Rondi, often involving drunken nakedness and daredevil stunts (See photo)

C

C&R - Catch & Release. 1.) involves bringing your quarry to hand then releasing it. It's really fun to do but difficult to explain to children or the attractive PETA member you're taking on a blind date, 2.) the flyfisherman's best friend when it comes to weaving a good fish tale, 3.) what you tell your spouse when trying to justify the amount of money spent on tackle, guided fishing trips and tying materials without tangible results

CO - Central Oregon

CP - Crane Prairie, also Crane, and CPR (Crane Prairie Reservoir)

CR - Crooked River

Cake - steelhead fishing

Caddisman - I admit to originating the irreverent use of the word 'CAKE' to describe steelhead fishing, much to the dismay of those of you who are still "paying dues". I was lucky enough to catch a couple on my first, dedicated trip out. And I jokingly exclaimed to my partner, Riffle Hitch, that steelhead fishing was, "...a piece of cake." Since then, I've caught several more, only reinforcing the concept that steelhead fishing is, indeed, a piece of CAKE!

Cake Fly - steelhead pattern of unquestioned efficacy (See photo)

Cane - see "Boo"

Chic - Chickahominy Reservoir

Coffin Nails - cigarettes

Chromer - a steelhead fresh from the saltwater

Chuck'n'Duck - 1.) a fly used to catch Smallies while dabbling, 2.) term to describe casting with heavily weighted nymphs or streamers

Clack - Clackamas River

Coug'ed it - what the WA guys say when they LDR a fish

Hawkeye - The origin of the phrase comes from WSU Cougar football when they "Coug'ed it" (find a way to always lose/choke to the Huskies). I was trying to make up a more truer and factual way that the WA guys should say when they LDR a fish (I'm formerly from WA and used to live in E-Burg). One of my fishing buddies, a guy I grew up with, is a big Cougar fan, and I like to heckle him when he loses a fish by saying "Ah, Troy you Coug'ed it again!!"

Crane - Crane Prairie Reservoir

Cruisers - carp that are not feeding; also "Baskers"

Custom Rod Owner - someone who's trying to catch their second steelhead

Cutt (s) - Cutthroat Throat, also Cutties - Westslope Cutthroat (See photo)

D

Dabble (or Dabbling) - sight fishing for Smallies using a Chuck'n'Duck

Dark Side - 1.) steelhead fishing, 2.) nymph fishing, 3.) nymph fishing with an indicator, 4.) nymph fishing with an indicator for steelhead

The D - Deschutes River, also "The Big D" (See photo)

Dip - 1.) to fall in the river, 2.) lip candy, tobacco snuff

Dog - a non-jumper. Also see "Boot"

E

EHC - Elk Hair Caddis

ESL - Egg-Sucking Leech

Eastside - the area east of Lake Washington, some even say east of West Seattle

Etiquette - 1.) the quasi accepted practice of taking possession of public water. Usually not an issue unless there are fish around, 2.) what we all demand of others while simultaneously ignoring in our own behavior, 3.) manners, politeness, as in "Use your manners, they're brand new"

F

FUBAR - Fouled Up Beyond All Recognition, as in when your dropper fly does a triple axel around your tool fly; often a less polite word is substituted for "fouled"

Fall Fish - fall run chinook salmon

Fat Freddie - feisty, muscular Lower Deschutes River redside trout. Term generally used in the presence of minor children when the fly fisher is so impressed with the preceding battle that when landing said fish, he says, "hey, look at that fat (Instant Edit: f*kin') freddie!"

FatFreddie - The fisherman who first used this term has most certainly been exposed to"The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers" (only those of that generation are fully able to draw the proper inference). One of the brothers was named Fat Freddie. Freddie also had a cat, which doesn't figure in this story except that it probably would have eaten any fish Fat Freddie caught had Fat Freddie been a fisherman

First Water - the practice of staying ahead of the crowd so you can fish the water first. A common cause of Etiquette disputes. See "Pinhead."

F.I.D.O. - F*** It, Drive On; something said when driving along a river and you notice that your "secret" spot is shoulder-to-shoulder gear plunkers

Flaming - something that happens on BBs other than Westfly's.

Flossing - after brushing activity or the act of running your leader through a fish's mouth till hooked up. Often thought to be a useful tactic for chum salmon - or at least that's what they call it instead of snagging

Football - a Deschutes redside, also "Fat Freddie" (See photo)

Frank - a "super angler" known for his prowess with lures and meticulous keeping of fishing statistics... but is he real? We may never know; inventor of the TPH scale

Frog Water - what you have to row through for trout and steelhead fishing. Where you stop to fish for smallmouth

G

GRHE - Gold-ribbed Hare's Ear

Garden Hackle - worm-tipped fly

Gearhead - fly fisherman in the larval stage; those who are not pure; untouchables

Glass - a fiberglass rod, heavy, slow and generally useless, unless you're in a totally retro mood

Golden Bonefish - carp

Grass - see "Boo"

H

HESH - Hare's Ear Soft Hackle, an acceptable steelhead fly

Heretic - a nymph fisher who uses an indicator, often unrepentant

GraciesDad - as a self-described "heretic", I steadfastly refuse the "purist" approach to flyfishing. The classic example involved a newly repaired cane rod. The first day I had it out on the Metolius I was casting weighted nymphs under an indicator. I'm sure there's a special place in Hell for a fly angler willing to do THAT!

Hookup - meeting up with another Westflier on a river either as planned or by accident

Hot Fish - 1.) a hard fighting fish that jumps a lot, 2.) a fish fresh from the saltwater.

I

IMHO - In My Humble Opinion, term passed down from King Henry VIII; also IMNSHO, a term TheShadKing claims to have invented in '84 or possibly in '85 but he can't completely prove it

Indicator - the fly fishing equivalent of a bobber, usually smaller in diameter, but no less offensive to the more frail fly anglers; an antipurist device

J

Jones - the undeniable urge to be fishing. Left unattended could lead to utter madness, persistent chafing, or golf lessons

Just Around the Bend - where you tell everyone you caught your last steelhead so they'll leave YOUR WATER alone

K

KF - Klamath Falls

KL - Klamath Lake

Kick Some Fin - what you say you're gonna do on the drive to the river in the morning (i.e. since fish don't have asses)

LDR - Long Distance Release, failure to land a fish after setting the hook. Whether they are counted in the day's tally is a matter of much debate. Often followed by the statement "I meant to do that" or "I was going to release him anyway"; like an expensive blind date that leads nowhere. Also "Premature release"

LMB - Large Mouth Bass (See Photo)

LOL - Laughing Out Loud; also LMAO and ROFLMAO and they stand for "Laughing My A$$ Off" and "Rolling On Floor Laughing My A$$ Off", respectively

Leech - Formerly: an in-law or friend who only shows up at inopportune times, often for the purpose of "borrowing" money. Current: an inferior flyfishing method involving an indicator; regarded by purists as the lowest of the angling in the flyfishing world, also see "heretic"

Lurker - 1.) one who watches from afar often intending to learn otherwise privileged information, 2.) the Westfly version of a "voyeur"

M

MFW - Middle Fork Willamette, also MFWR (Middle Fork Willamette River) (See Photo)

MP - Megapixels. The measure of a digital camera

MT - Montana. Arguably the trout capital of the world.

Mac - McKenzie River, also The McK

Matsyavataram - in this Avataram, Mahavishnu took the form of a fish to retrieve the vedas from the Asura Hayagreevan (head of a horse) and also to safeguard herbs and seeds at the end of one cycle of creation

The Met - Metolius River, also "The Mighty Met" (See Photo)

Metalhead - an irreverent reference to a majestic steelhead

Mine Field - what every river has, a rocky area of river of difficult navigation; also Rock Garden

Mulleted Multitudes - 1.) timeless Mark Benke quote, synonymous with gear chuckers. 2.) largely "larval stage flyfishermen" fighting for dominance amongst the herd, often found while feeding on Milwaukee's Best, also "Toothless Wonders", "Billy Bob", "The Local Gentry", or "Darrells"

Mustads - used to be the standard in fly hooks. Like Generic Beer, they'll get you there but not like Super Hooks

N

NEO - North East Oregon

NFA - North Fork of the Alsea, also NF

NFMFW - North Fork of the Middle Fork of the Willamette

NFS - North Fork Santiam

NLGD - No Longer Give a Damn. It's 39 degrees and raining. Your waders are leaking. Your fingers are frozen. You haven't caught a fish in four days. At some point, you just NLDG and drive home.

NWHE - Nick's Walking Hairs Ear

Notellum Creek- mythical place that only you know, closely guarded secret; associated with the expression, "I'll have to shoot you after I take you there"

OT (or O/T) - Off Topic

Ole Rusty - 1.) a local yokel old time fisherman, 2.) one's favorite fly used for years till hook is rusty

On Top - dry fly fishing

P

PBR - Pabst Blue Ribbon, a smooth drinking hops and barley beverage that has been scientifically proven to increase catch rates by 20% (your actual catch rates may vary). Also shown to dramatically increase the wit of men and the attractiveness of women between 10:30pm and 2:00am. Please consume responsibly

PDX - Portland. Often used to refer to vicinity of, or distance from

PED - Pale Evening Dun

PFD - Personal Floatation Device, the label used when charging $80 for a Life Jacket

PIFB - Pass It Forward Box. Rules vary, but basically, people who sign up to participate receive a fly box in the mail, take flies out that were tied by others and add flies of their own to replace them

PM - Private Message

PMD - Pale Morning Dun

PT - Pheasant Tail

Paying Dues - steelhead fishermen who are enduring freezing water, wind driven snow, frozen fingers, icy roads, and iced up guides with nothing to show for it - sometimes for years on end

Pay-to-play Fishery - a private pond or reach of a stream, full of large fish, and accessible only by paying a fee to the owner. Distinguished from put-and-take only by the price of access

Pellet-Head - hatchery trout

Pig - a term for a large trout. Sometimes considered mildly offensive by those who love the noble trout, also "Hog", "Hawg", and "Piggy"

Pinhead - 1.) what's left when you shave the Mullet off

Poor Man's Tarpon - shad

Premature Strike - What happens when you're swinging and not paying attention

Purist - 1.) put down artist. Inspired the invention of the speaker phone, 2.) skunked angler who insists that style is more important than results

Put-and-take Fishery - where pellet-heads are stocked for the joy of the consumptive fisher and children

Rattlesnake Creek - any desert spring creek that is far too secret and unnamed to divulge; name used to withhold the true name and thus keep the masses at bay

Redside - a rainbow trout that makes some Westflyers loose sleep

Riff-raff - attendees of a rondi. Sometimes mistaken for the rock and dirt structure along a riverbank to protect the shore (riprap)

Rock Throwing - 1.) indicator nymph fishing on the Metolius river, 2.) tactic for getting someone to move from the hole you want to fish, 3.) Trilateralist conspiracy, related to the Stonecutters, the Millenium Group, and the Men In Black.

GraciesDad - This was one of the strange events you sometimes encounter at the riverside. As I reported at the time: "First thing in the morning I'm fishing "my" spot on the Metolius, minding my own business, when I hear, "KERPLUNK!" behind me...it sounded like someone threw a fair sized rock in the river...a minute or two later, I heard the SAME SOUND...ok, so now I'm looking around...about 2 minutes later, this guy comes wading downstream, sees me and crosses the riffle above me...no wave, no "Hi howya doin'"...but he's staring at me the whole way across the riffle...

Call me paranoid, but I almost think that he was pitching rocks in the river behind me to get me to move out of a hole he wanted to fish...Hell, I'd only been there about 15 minutes - that and it's about 7:30am! - and I was catching fish ...suffice it to say, I wasn't moving...

Is it really possible that someone would throw rocks like that?...I gotta tell you, it was a surreal moment, even for the Metolius...."

Rocky Ford - famous eastside stream, home of the "Winter Nationals & Couch Burn"

Rodeo Rules - the philosophy that any fish that's been on for 8 seconds or longer, could have been caught and therefore "counts" even if it is LDR'ed. Named in honor of the Ellensburg Rodeo, since it is often invoked in the vicinity of that particular cowtown; a rule such as this must be agreed to by all fishing partners prior to the start of the day's fishing

Rondi - a Westfly fishing social. Come one, come all (i.e. you're invited)

Rubber Hatch (also called the "inner tube hatch", "kayak hatch" or the "vinyl hatch"); a flotilla of rafters

S

S.A.C. - Spousal Avoidance Center, a workbench in the garage or flytying station where momentary solitude can be achieved; a place where farting, belching, ass scratching, and drunken hijinx are beyond disapproving glares

Tungsten Beadhead (aka TBH) - I guess I better fess up and give credit where credit is due. The SAC (Spousal Avoidance Center) phrase was actually coined by my "spouse" Angela. I guess she caught on after too many nights in the garage in cold temps wearing my down jacket. I guess I do have a keg of homebrew on tap in the garage so it was pretty obvious!

SBV - Scruffy Bearded Varmint, a Westfly personality and warrior in the fight to retain our access to Oregon's Rivers.

SFS - South Fork Santiam

SRC - Searun Cutthroat

SWMBO - She Who Must Be Obeyed

Sac - the Sacramento River

Sage - an expensive fly rod that's worth the money. Think of it as plastic surgery for the fly fisher's wallet

St. Andrew The Apostle - patron saint of anglers (fishermen) and fish mongers; also patron saint of Scotland, the gout, old maids, Russia, singers, sore throats, and women who wish to become mothers

GraciesDad - Interesting that two of the world's great fisheries, Scotland and Russia, have the same patron. Good thing he's looking out for all of us, especially when it comes to "women who wish to become mothers" and the gout!

Scud Dragger - Washington Westflyer

Scully - rarely seen, red-headed young woman who is a frequent fishing companion (imaginary)

Secret Eastside Desert Creek (SEDC) - one of 2 "streams" that actually have water (but not necessarily fish) in them in eastern Washington

Silver - coho salmon

Slim Jim - a very thin, snake-like fish

Sluggo - nickname of a big bull trout streamer

Sniffer - a fish that puts its nose to your fly and follows it in but doesn't take

Sorehead -an old springer, often found swimming next to you with a white head

Soremouth (-ed) - fish who have been stung by your fly and are rendered uncatchable

Smallie - Smallmouth Bass, also SMB or Bronzeback (See Photo)

Smooth landing - when everyone hops out at the gravel bar to stop the boat and nobody dips [FatFreddie]

Softies - Soft Hackles; ancient, simple flies consisting of a floss (or sparsely dubbed) body and a soft, webby hackle, quite possibly the most versatile family of fly patterns known to man (See Photo)

Springer - spring run chinook

Steel - steelhead, also "Metalhead" or "Chromer"

Step Ladder - a fishing "tool", comes complete with cup and rod holders, arm rests and a polarized spotting scope, these fishing accessories (available in the Sharper Image catalogue) are all the rage on the McKenzie; a steelheading tool often used on the McKenzie, also "Spotting Ladder" (See Photo)

Stones - stoneflies

Strike Indicator - an indicator that's working

Studs - something we were when we never fell down; now something we wear to keep from falling down

Summer - summer run steelhead

Super Hooks - chemically sharpened hooks that are very strong and almost never go dull, such as Tiemco, Gamakatsu, etc.; pricey, they are the Champagne of fly hooks

Swamp Donkey - critter well known and feared by Montana fishers; also, Freakin' Moose (See Photo)

Swap (also Fly Swap) - the ultimate chain-letter event of the tier's year, each participant in a given swap is required to tie enough flies of their individual pattern for all of the participants, the "Swap Master" collects the flies from all of the tiers and then distributes one of each pattern to the participants, can take the form of any family or type of fly

Swinging - this has nothing to do with taking your buddy's wife fly fishing. It's a relaxation technique that lets the current and the fish do the work; relaxation is usually achieved because the fish leave your fly alone

T

TL's - Tight Lines, a fly fisherman's polite salutation

T.P.H. - Trout-Per-Hour, a "Frankian" term for describing how many fish you catch in an hour. The Frankian T.P.H. Scale usually begins at 1.6 tph for steelhead and salmon and 10.0 tph for trout, always calculated to the first decimal point

Tailers - feeding carp, also "Mudders"

Tard - less than polite term for an Oregon Westflyer; what the Washington Boys call the Oregon Men because Washington only has the Yak and Oregon has the D

Tipped - fly that is baited with worm, Power Bait, etc.

Tool - 1.) a guy clogging up productive water but not catching any when you know you could be nailing them there, 2.) that guy you pass on the trail decked out head-to-toe in Orvis gear

Tool Fly - a heavy nymph usually used in a two- or three-fly rig in place of splitshot, especially useful where attached weights are prohibited (i.e. The Metolius River), also "Anchor Fly"

'Toon - a pontoon boat

Troll - 1.) a mischievous dwarf or giant of Teutonic/Scandinavian folklore often inhabiting caves, hills, or the undersides of bridges, 2.) a post designed to deliberately agitate unsuspecting Westflyers

Trouthole - the man who really puts the beans before the frank

Trunker - the buddy you take out to a secret spot, only to have them write clear and specific detail about it online; where they will ride if they ever want to fish with you again

U

The U - Umpqua River (See Photo)

"Uncle Fuzzy" - Scott Richmond, rightful Westfly Member #1, the founder of Westfly, and Chairman of the Bored.

VFT - Valuable Fishing Time, also OFH (optimal fishing hours)

W

WB - Woolly Bugger

WBTNT - Westfly Bull Trout Netting Team

Gary AKA One Fish - Spent the morning with TBH, Caddisman, and Patrick at a favorite Bull hole. We took turns hooking big fish. We landed several nice Bulls. Good to give Bill a taste of the "Other Dark Side". Patrick was the only one unable to land one although he did have his bug in a couple of trout mouths. Patrick also manned the big camera today. We also had a good display by the Westfly Bull Trout Netting Team.

Westfly - where they tell tales of tailing to 'toons tremendous trout taken on tiny tippet-tailed tackle

Westfly Oldtimer - just about anyone with a member number under 500

GraciesDad - This is really a quantity over quality argument, I know. It's just that if you're going to drive all that way, the least you can do is stay and enjoy yourself. Then again, it really requires a bit of planning that might escape the "I gotta fish at all costs" mentality. I mean seriously, if you're prepared to fish by the 3X rule, then you damn sure don't want to arrive at the river without your boots, or your reel, or your fly boxes.
