Uses

Imitates the adult stage of the cranefly. See also Jeff Morgan's article on tying and fishing this fly.

How to Fish

Dress the fly with floatant and use standard dry fly presentations.

Tying Directions

1. Tie in deer hair at about the midpoint of the hook shank. Make evenly spaced wraps backwards, then crisscross back to the tie-in point. Trim off the excess. The body should be about as long as the hook shank.

2. Tie-in four of the knotted pheasant tail legs, two on each side of the body.

3. Tie in the Shimazaki Fly Wing. Trim to the desired wing shape. They should be as long as the body and about 1/8" wide.

4. Tie inthe hackle, and make 3-5 wraps. You don't want too much hackle; you just want to give the fly a little extra floatation help.

5. Finally, tie two more legs at the head, angled back through the hackle. Tying these in here instead of putting all six below the wings lets the legs sprawl out all over and make the fly more gangly.

6. Whip finish, then cement the head. I like to coat the body with Dave's Flexament. This will greatly increase the life of the extended deer hair body.
