Uses

This fly represents a terrestrial beetle that is blown or falls onto the water. In the natural world, this is an event that happens often enough that trout recognize struggling beetles and regard them as a tasty treat. The fly is useful in lakes as well as rivers.

This dressing is for a tree bark beetle. It uses deer hair dubbing; see the article Deer Hair Dubbing--The Sequel.

How to Fish

Use standard dry fly presentations. Let the fly drift naturally, but give it an occasional small twitch so it looks like a struggling insect. An audible landing can direct the attention of the trout.

Tying Instructions

1. De-barb hook, insert in vise, and start thread.

2. Tie in black Body Stretch

3. Mix deer hair and dub a moderately narrow body

4. Pull Body Stretch over body tightly, then trim.

5. Tie in widgeon flank for antennae

6. Dub small head of peacock Ice-dub

7. Whip finish and trim thread.

8. Apply spots to back with paint, if you want.
