if I used an 8wt to chase chums? Never fished for them before but just finished building an 8wt for steelies and Capr and I'm itchin to give it a go. A client mentioned to me that he was chasing chum this weekend and it got me wondering if I could use my spanky new 8wt. If i'm undergunned I'll just go look for some steel next week.

Just go. It will likely be more "Jessica" to be undergunned.

I've fished Chums on a 6wt and been "undergunned", but my 8 felt just about right.

I have fished a tiny WA coastal chum run where the fish run small...6-8 lbs...The first time I experienced fishing for them wmy intent was not to target them...I was fishing SRC's late in the season and got into some chums...it was interesting...I have used my 7 since...but I believe an 8 is just right...There is not a salmonoid that is a better biter of flies than the chum...lime green streamers seemed to be the ticket consistantly

I went a few years back on the Oregon Coast with a 9 weight and a Teeny mini-tip line. There were a few of them that made me feel under-gunned. I like to try to get them in as fast as possible and release, hence the 9 weight.

An 8wt would work fine, but if you need to turn them it may be a challenge. It's hard to stop and turn a rocket with shoulders.... smile.

What Eric said. If an 8wt is what you've got, it's adequate and you'll have a lot of fun. If I had unlimited choice and $$$ was no object, I'd probably go with a 9wt.
