Uses

Imitates large terrestrial or semi-aquatic midges. The Bibio can also represent It a dark stonefly, wasp, adult cranefly, or even an emaciated cricket or hopper. Jeff Morgan says, "Don't shy away from size 8 or 10 imitations. It excels in these large sizes. Over the course of this summer in Yellowstone, I have found that a size 10 black Bibio has consistently outfished ant patterns for stubborn trout during non-hatch periods."

Variations

Body colors can be natural pheasant tail as well as olive or black dyed pheasant tail.

How to Fish

Dress the fly with floatant and use standard dry fly presentations near overhanging vegetation. Early summer is often a good time for this pattern.

Tying Instructions

1. Debarb hook, place in vise, start thread.

 
2. Tie in 5-7 pheasant tail fibers, tip first.

 
3. Tie in clear monofilament ribbing material.

 
4. Wrap pheasant tail body.

 
5. Counter-wrap ribbing.

 
6. Tie in Raffia wing, trim to shape.

 
7. Tie in foam post.

 
8. Tie in hackle.

 
9. Dub thorax.

 
10. Wrap hackle around post, tie off.

 
11. Pull post over and tie down.

 
12. Whipfinish and trim.
