Uses

Use to imitate mayfly duns when they are present on the surface. Like the Elk Hair Caddis that it is patterned after, the Hairwing Dun is a simple, versatile dressing that works in a wide variety of fishing situations. While it may not fool super-fussy spring-creek trout, it will take fish in most other circumstances.

Variations

By varying the size and body color, you can cover a lot of hatches. At a minimum, carry the olive dressing listed above in sizes 18-20 (imitates blue-winged olives), and pale morning dun version (tan thread, ginger tail, cream body, ginger hackle; size 16-18). Another useful variations is an Adams color (gray thread, grizzly tail, gray body, grizzly and brown mixed hackle, gray wing). Other mayflies can be imitated by using hook sizes and body colors that match the natural insect.
