HOOK: Dai Riki 270, size 10-14

THREAD: Brown or yellow to match body

BODY: Chernobyl body (available in packages at fly shops). Cut lengthwise in half. Use brown/orange for salmonfly imitations, tan/yellow for golden stoneffly imitations.

UNDERWING: Pre-cut Spirit River fabric wing material

OVERWING: Dark deer hair

LEGS: Brown rubber

TOP: Orange foam

Uses

Early in the salmonfly/golden stonefly cycle, trout are reluctant to switch from the nymphs they've been gorging on to the adults. Sometimes are smaller pattern such as this can be more effective in this early stage of the hatch. For more information about this fly, see the article Last-Minute Stones

How to Fish

Use standard dry fly presentations near the bank. The best places are just downstream of downwind from overhanging trees or other vegetation.

Tying Instructions

1. Cut Chernobyl body in half.

 
2. Debarb hook and place it into vice. Start thread.

 
3. Make base of thread. Coat base with superglue.

 
4. Tie on Chernobyl body at rear of hook.

 
5. Advance thread and tie on the body at the thorax.

 
6. Tie in underwing.

 
7. Tie in dark elk hair overwing.

 
8. Tie on orange foam.

 
9. Tie in back pair of legs.

 
10. Advance thread and tie on body behind head.

 
11. Tie down foam.

 
12. Tie in second pair of legs.

 
13. Whipfinish and trim.
