Poly-Wing Trico Spinner

HOOK: TMC 100, sizes 18-20

THREAD: Black

WING: Light gray poly yarn. Wings stick straight out the sides so they lie flat on the water.

TAIL: Dark dun hackle fibers or Betts Tailing Fibers

BODY: Black thread ribbed with light green hackle stem

THORAX: Black Superfine

  polywing trico spinner, male

Uses

Imitates the spinner stage of male trico mayflies.

Variations

A female trico is imitated with a light olive abdomen. Because the male and female spinners are different colors, and because trout can be selectively feeding on one gender rather than the other, it's important to have both male and female imitations in your fly box.

How to Fish

Dress with floatant and use standard dry fly presentations. Because tricos are generally found on slow water, and because they are small, you will usually have to use a 7X tippet during a spinner fall.
