Uses

Imitates the adult stage of the cranefly. See also Jeff Morgan's article on tying and fishing this fly.

How to Fish

Tying directions

1. Put the bead on the hook, and debarb the hook.

2. Tie in the vernille body at the midpoint of the shank. Burn the end of the vernille so that it won't unravel.

3. Tie in two of the knotted pheasant tail fibers on each side of the body.

4. Tie in the raffia strips. Try to have them facing backwards over the end of the fly. Trim the strips into a wing shape.

5. Tie in hackle. Keep it sparse and slicked back. You can tie it a little more dense and "upright," which will slow the sink rate of the fly and will fool fish that stubbornly only take the fly when it enters the water.

6. Whip finish and cement. Make sure you add cement, otherwise the bead can grind on the thread and cause the fly to unravel. Also, add a coat of lacquer over the bead, to keep it shiny.
