Pupa

Size 12-18 Soft Hackle, , Deep Sparkle Pupa. Body: tan, green; Shroud: tan

Riffles, runs, just below riffles: surface swing, shallow nymph

Adult

Size 12-18 Goddard Caddis, X Caddis, Parachute Caddis, Elk Hair Caddis. Body: brown, green, dark gray; Wing: tan, brown

Egg-layer

Size 12-18 Diving Caddis, Soft Hackle. Body: brown; Wing: black

Riffles, current seams, backeddies below riffles: surface swing, shallow nymph, rising nymph

► The Parachute Caddis works best in slow sections.

► Look for evening hatches. Size 14-16 dry flies and pupa patterns should cover most situations. Use flies with tan or brown bodies.

Adult

Size 4-10 Madam X, Daves Hopper, Morrish Hopper. Tan/yellow, olive/yellow, green

Bankwater with grass: standard dry fly

Adult

Size 2-8 Muddler, Woolly Bugger, Clouser Minnow, Possie Bugger. Browns, olives, silver, greens

Lakes; rivers over gravel and cobble, undercut banks: count-down-and-retrieve, slow retrieve, wind drift, deep swing

► Besides rainbow trout, the upper Deschutes has some enormous brown trout (5-10 pounds, some even bigger). They're unlikely to rise for your caddis patterns, but if you cast a large streamer near the bank and retrieve it, you might tie into a real trophy. The best brown trout fishing will be near dusk.

Trout

► Below Wickiup, you'll probably find better fishing below the Fall River confluence.

► The river closed above Wickiup Reservoir at the end of August.

General

► This part of the river is best fished from a boat, but there are several good bank-fishing spots.
